Our story · Kirra, Gold Coast

Two generations on the same stretch of sand

Before Haig St poured its first coffee, our family had already spent more than a decade feeding Kirra. This corner is simply the next chapter.

How we got here

The short version

2007

Kirramisu opens

Our family opens Kirramisu Cafe & Restaurant on the Kirra beachfront and it becomes a local institution, packed with regulars.

2015

A move along the beach

Redevelopment nudges Kirramisu a few blocks north along the foreshore. The regulars follow. The view stays exactly the same.

2019

Haig St is born

When the old petrol station corner beside Kirramisu comes up for lease, owner Emma Collingwood takes it and opens Haig St. "It was like having a new baby after fifteen years."

The family trade

A sister cafe with its own personality

Haig St is the younger sibling to Kirramisu. Same family, same standards, its own ideas. It's where Emma's new dishes get their first run, with chef Kenneth McPherson (ex-Wine Barrel) leading a kitchen that cares as much about how a plate looks as how it tastes.

Being family owned and run shapes everything: generous plates, a kids menu that treats under-12s like real customers, and the people looking after you actually owning the place.

The venue

Golden walls, sea air & 135 seats

Wrap-around glass looks straight over the grassed foreshore to Kirra Beach. Inside, golden sponge-painted walls give the room a warm Mediterranean glow, softened by abundant greenery and recycled timber.

Out front, we were the first beachside venue on the coast approved for umbrellas set into the ground, so the outside tables sit in proper shade all day. A photo of the old petrol station that once stood here still hangs on the wall.

What we care about

The Haig St way

Fresh, from scratch

House-made hollandaise, pickles, slaw, sauces and compotes. If we can make it ourselves, we do, and you can taste the difference.

Everyone eats well

Gluten-friendly, dairy-free and vegetarian options marked on every menu, not hidden in the fine print, backed by a kitchen that accommodates wherever it can.

Local first

Byron Bay granola, Humpty Doo barramundi, Burleigh-distilled vodka, Stone & Wood in the fridge. We back the producers around us.
